The reason that I gave this product 4 stars is that it is really only one step up from the in-camera flash and, although it does give good coverage within a small radius, for outdoor shots with fill-in flash you need to go for a larger flash gun.
But a good overall product for this entry level DSLR.

I recently added this to my camera kit as I needed to boost my in-camera flash. The flash kit comes with its own handy zipped carry pouch and is neat and small in both size and weight. Easy to fit, and uses 2 AA batteries with a quick recharge time. You can programme the strength of the flash by using the in-camera menu and this does prove a little awkward if you want to take a succession of shots at different levels as you have to return to the menu.The reason that I gave this product 4 stars is that it is really only one step up from the in-camera flash and, although it does give good coverage within a small radius, for outdoor shots with fill-in flash you need to go for a larger flash gun.

Pretty decent
Good battery. I use it for a nikon coolpix 4300. For simply taking photos the battery will last a long time, however using the screen to playback photos/movies a lot, drains the batteries, especially when zooming in when reviewing pictures. Having said that it was good enough for two days solid use.

wonderful flash unit marred by its menu system
Another reviewer has commented that the unit lost a star in its rating because it was not very intuitive to use. I agree absolutely.While my D200 operation is helped by a clear menu system the SB-800 menu is plain horrid; it is difficult to access quickly and the instruction manual is not a great help. However once you get it set up the remote operation is very very impressive.
I assume that persons who buy this unit will want to use it in more ways than sitting on top of a camera in auto mode; in which case they will be willing to invest the time and practice needed to learnt how to quickly change between modes of operation - if they are then this is a good investment
